The Ladder Backed pullover is knitted in two distinct layers- an outer layer of natural undyed Voe Shetland wool, and an inner layer of contrasting dyed soft lambswool. The tubular neck binding is linked on and the cast-off clean finished hem and cuffs, with no rib, curl back gently at the edges.

The garment construction is similar to a Fair Isle, but instead of crossing top and bottom yarns to create a multi-colour pattern, the layers are only caught together with a minimum of cross stitches, which barely show from the outside, and create a ladder pattern on the back (inside) of the fabric. This structure creates a particularly warm pullover for its light weight.
